This poem comes from feeling worn out by constant gentle pressure to believe in things I never agreed to. ‘Their Ordure’ is part of HUSH HALO, my dystopian poetry collection. As of today, this hasn’t been published anywhere else.
Their Ordure
Hush Halo · Poetry by Sam Oldman
They put on hold
my desire to sleep. They forced the lid
on my need to scream.Tempting me.
Gently pulling me off my center,
without dragging me forward,
without risking disorder,
by bullying me
into becoming a believer,
made me their ordure.

CONTEXT: After the Great Optimization we all had a choice. This poem reflects on the realm chosen by Systoics, a privileged group that integrated into the system, believing they had now perfected themselves.
I’m Sam.
A mother of two,
a neurohappy writer with
a shade of inbuilt melancholy.

Sam, what unsettles me here is that nobody needs to drag the speaker anywhere. The pressure is gentle, almost polite, but it still takes away the freedom to disagree. That can be harder to recognize than open hostility. And the idea of being treated as waste simply for refusing to believe what others believe is disturbing.
